Grand Tunis Gears Up: Bus Fleet Boost and Metro Enhancements Ahead of 2025 Academic Year
As the 2025 academic year approaches, bringing its annual surge in urban transport demand, Tunisian authorities are proactively accelerating the modernization of public transit in Grand Tunis. This strategic push aims to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure and improve daily commutes for millions. The measures highlight a significant investment in enhancing urban mobility, a critical aspect of development for rapidly growing African cities.
Expanding the Bus Network for Greater Tunis
Central to these efforts is a substantial expansion of the bus fleet. On Saturday, July 12, the Tunis Transport Company (Transtu) received a second consignment of 189 buses from Chinese manufacturer King Long. These new additions follow an earlier delivery of 111 buses in June, bringing the total to 300 new vehicles. The primary objective is to reinforce service in Grand Tunis’s most populous areas, where bus lines are currently stretched to their limits. Densely inhabited districts such as Ettadhamen, Mnihla, Raoued, La Marsa, and Ben Arous, which together host a significant portion of the Grand Tunis area’s approximately 3 million residents, are marked for priority service. Furthermore, this initiative will facilitate the reintroduction of bus lines that had been suspended due to the dilapidated state of older equipment, promising a more reliable and extensive network.
This comprehensive upgrade to the bus fleet, alongside plans for metro and suburban rail modernization through a new tender process, underscores Tunisia’s commitment to improving its public transport infrastructure. These enhancements are crucial steps towards easing the notorious traffic congestion in Grand Tunis, ensuring a smoother back-to-school period, and fostering more sustainable urban mobility for its citizens.
