Bolt to Implement NIN Verification for Riders by Q4 2025: A Landmark Move for Safety

Ride-hailing giant Bolt is set to introduce mandatory National Identification Number (NIN) verification for its riders in Nigeria, with plans to roll out this crucial safety measure as early as Q4 2025. This development marks a significant step towards addressing long-standing safety concerns within the e-hailing industry, aiming to enhance the security of both drivers and passengers across the country.

Prioritizing Rider and Driver Safety

The push for mandatory rider verification stems directly from persistent demands by e-hailing drivers, who view it as a critical component for drastically improving their safety. Tragic incidents, including the unfortunate killings of three e-hailing drivers in Abuja and Port Harcourt in 2023, underscored the urgent need for such protocols. Following these devastating events, the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transport Workers of Nigeria (AUATON) intensified calls for government intervention to mandate robust rider identification systems. Weyinmi Aghadiuno, Bolt’s Senior Public Policy Manager, confirmed during a recent safety-focused media parley in Lagos that discussions are actively underway with regulatory bodies and drivers’ unions. The aim is to establish NIN verification as a standard across the entire ride-hailing sector, fostering a safer environment for all users. This initiative, first reported by Technext, signifies Bolt’s commitment to collaborative efforts to enhance industry safety and accountability.

The proposed implementation of NIN verification by Bolt represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s dynamic ride-hailing ecosystem. By enhancing accountability and traceability for every ride, this measure has the potential to significantly mitigate risks, build greater trust between users, and set a new benchmark for safety standards across the industry, ultimately benefiting all stakeholders involved in the digital transport space.
