DStv Price Hikes Return to Kenya, Sparking Consumer Concerns

Kenyan DStv subscribers are bracing themselves for another round of price increases, effective August 1st. This marks a continuation of a trend of rising costs that has persisted over the past five years, leaving many consumers questioning the value of their subscriptions. This latest adjustment, implemented by MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv, will impact various package tiers, potentially influencing consumer choices in the competitive African media landscape.

Package-by-Package Price Increases

The upcoming price hikes will see DStv package costs increase between 4% and 7%. The most expensive residential tier, the Premium package, will rise from KES 11,000 to KES 11,700 (approximately $91). Other tiers will also be affected: Compact Plus will increase to KES 7,300 ($57), Compact to KES 4,200 ($33), Family to KES 2,250 ($17), Access to KES 1,450 ($11), and Lite to KES 750 ($6). Additionally, the cost of XtraView, a service that allows users to connect multiple decoders, is also increasing, with the price rising to KES 1,700 ($13). While DStv packages become pricier, MultiChoice is making adjustments in other areas, such as its digital offerings, to balance costs.

Showmax Mobile Rates Reduced

In an attempt to mitigate subscriber churn and cater to price-conscious consumers, MultiChoice is simultaneously reducing the rates for Showmax’s mobile-only plans. The General Entertainment (GE) plan will decrease from KES 650 to KES 550 (approximately $4 to $3), and the mobile-only version will fall from KES 300 to KES 200 (approximately $2 to $1.55). These moves highlight the company’s strategy to maintain a competitive edge by offering both premium and more affordable entertainment options in the dynamic Kenyan media market.
