Bolt Pioneers Passenger NIN Verification in Nigerian Ride-Hailing by Q4 2025

Bolt, a prominent ride-hailing company operating in Nigeria, has announced plans to implement mandatory National Identification Number (NIN) verification for its passengers, a move anticipated to commence by the fourth quarter of 2025. This significant disclosure was made by Weyinmi Aghadiuno, Bolt’s Senior Public Policy Manager, during a recent media briefing in Lagos that centered on safety measures within the ride-hailing sector. The initiative underscores a growing commitment to enhancing security and accountability for commuters across the platform.

# Reinforcing Safety Through Industry-Wide Regulatory Frameworks

During the discussion on the regulatory aspects of safety, Aghadiuno highlighted Bolt’s continuous engagement with governmental bodies to develop and enforce policies that safeguard the industry. She specifically pointed out rider verification as a key regulation that Bolt has been advocating for its comprehensive application across the entire ride-hailing ecosystem. This push is a collaborative effort, with Bolt working in tandem with the drivers’ union, AUATON, to achieve this industry-wide standard. Bolt has already initiated discussions with the Lagos State Government, specifically the Ministry of Transport, to establish a unified regulation that will apply universally to all ride-hailing services. As Aghadiuno articulated, “This is something we have been pushing alongside the drivers’ union. We have engaged the Lagos State Government. We are discussing with the Ministry of Transport to make a regulation that cuts across the board. So by Q3 or Q4, you should see a lot of sensitisation going out to passengers, letting them know this is what is coming their way.” This foreshadows a robust public awareness campaign slated for Q3 or Q4 2025, designed to prepare passengers for the upcoming NIN verification requirement.

The introduction of NIN verification for passengers by Bolt signifies a pivotal step towards bolstering the security and reliability of ride-hailing services in Nigeria. By actively collaborating with regulatory authorities and driver associations, Bolt is not only addressing critical safety concerns but also contributing to the establishment of a more structured and accountable environment within the nation’s dynamic tech-driven transport sector. This forthcoming policy change is poised to redefine the ride-hailing experience, ensuring greater peace of mind for millions of daily commuters.
