Telefónica, a global telecommunications giant with a significant presence in Africa, has achieved a remarkable feat. The company has been ranked as the second most sustainable company worldwide in the 2025 global ranking compiled by TIME magazine and Statista. This prestigious list recognizes the top 500 companies globally that demonstrate strong commitments to sustainability practices. This recognition highlights the company’s dedication to incorporating sustainability across its operations, making it a leader in the industry.
Telefónica’s Sustainability Strategy and Global Recognition
This year’s ranking marks a significant improvement for Telefónica, the leading telecommunications operator worldwide and the highest-ranking Spanish company on the list. The company climbed seven places from the previous year, achieving a score of 87.68, nearly seven points higher than in the last edition. This impressive rise reflects the company’s continuous efforts to enhance its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The company’s success is particularly relevant for African tech, as Telefónica, through its various subsidiaries, plays a key role in the continent’s digital transformation.
Elena Valderrábano, Telefónica’s Global Director of Sustainability (ESG), commented on the achievement.
