Roam and Keep It Cool Pioneer Electric Cold Chain for Sustainable Food Distribution in Kenya

A groundbreaking partnership between Roam and Keep It Cool (KIC) has led to the launch of a fully electric cold-chain distribution network, revolutionizing food logistics in Kenya. This innovative system seamlessly integrates solar-powered refrigeration with zero-emission electric delivery motorcycles, marking a significant step towards sustainable and efficient food supply chains. The initial phase of this collaboration sees five Roam Air electric motorcycles being integrated into Keep It Cool’s already advanced smart cold-chain infrastructure, enhancing their capacity for environmentally friendly delivery.

Accelerating Impact: Clean Energy for Food Security

This strategic alliance builds upon Keep It Cool’s existing efforts to combat food waste and enhance food security across Kenya. According to Abigail Gichigi, Operations Director at Keep It Cool, the company’s commitment to efficient cold storage and clean energy-powered logistics has already yielded substantial benefits. “Each year, we’re saving nearly 400 tonnes of fish that would otherwise end up in landfills—by investing in efficient cold storage and clean energy-powered cold logistics. These innovations are making safe, affordable food distribution scalable,” Gichigi stated. She emphasized that the partnership with Roam will further amplify this positive impact, delivering tangible advantages for both communities and the environment. KIC is a major player in Kenya’s food distribution landscape, currently transporting over 250,000 kilograms of fresh food every week. Their extensive network serves more than 4,000 small businesses and 40 supermarkets across major Kenyan cities, including Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Mombasa. The integration of Roam Air motorcycles, known for being designed and built in Kenya, underscores a commitment to local innovation and sustainable development.

This collaborative venture represents a pivotal moment for African tech and sustainable logistics. By leveraging cutting-edge electric vehicle technology and renewable energy, Roam and Keep It Cool are setting a new standard for cold-chain efficiency and environmental responsibility. This initiative not only reduces operational costs and carbon footprints but also ensures that fresh, high-quality food reaches consumers reliably, contributing significantly to food security and economic growth in the region. The expansion of this electric cold-chain network holds immense potential for scaling safe and affordable food distribution across Kenya and beyond, promising a greener future for logistics.
