Relizane Sovac Assembly Plant: A Potential Restart on the Horizon?
The Sovac assembly plant in Relizane, Algeria, which previously assembled vehicles for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda, may be revived. The factory was shut down and confiscated following corruption scandals after 2019. The Algerian government is now exploring the possibility of reopening the facility.
Government Reviewing Feasibility of Restart
In a written response to a member of the National People’s Assembly (APN), the Minister of Industry, Sifi Ghrieb, stated that the government is currently studying the plant’s potential reactivation. The response was publicized by Echorouk Online. According to the Minister, the plant is among the industrial units that the state is seeking to bring back online after years of inactivity. The revival will depend on the “economic feasibility and the expected social impact of its operation.” The Minister clarified that “unexploited industrial assets are managed within the framework of a global vision aimed at reintegrating them into the production cycle, taking into account their equipment.”
The potential relaunch of the Sovac plant represents a significant opportunity for Algeria’s automotive industry and the broader economy. The revival of manufacturing facilities like Sovac in Relizane is crucial for boosting local production, creating jobs, and reducing reliance on imports in line with Algeria’s industrialization goals.
