Geneva Launches WSIS+20: Two Decades of Progress and New Digital Challenges
Geneva recently hosted the inauguration of the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025, a pivotal gathering in preparation for the United Nations General Assembly’s review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process in December. This year’s event saw participation from ministers, business leaders, and representatives from international organizations and civil society.
Shaping the Future of Digital Development
Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Swiss Confederation from July 7th to 11th, the annual forum marks a critical juncture. Twenty years after the initial summits in Geneva and Tunis, the international community is tasked with outlining the roadmap for digital development beyond 2025. The WSIS+20 event emphasizes renewed commitments to sustainable development through digital technologies, universal connectivity, and enhanced global cooperation. With representatives from over 150 countries in attendance, discussions focused on leveraging digital advancements to bridge the digital divide, particularly in regions like Africa, and ensuring equitable access to technology for all. This includes addressing challenges such as infrastructure gaps, affordability, and digital literacy to unlock the full potential of digital technologies for economic and social progress across the continent and globally.
As the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025 concludes, the discussions and commitments made will undoubtedly shape the future of global digital policy and development, fostering a more inclusive and connected world. The focus on collaboration and innovation will be crucial in addressing the evolving digital challenges and opportunities in the years to come.
