Cameroon Regulator Penalizes MTN and Orange for Service Failures

Cameroon’s telecommunications regulatory body (TRB) has imposed substantial fines on MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon, totaling $4.6 million (2.6 billion francs CFA). The penalties stem from breaches of their licensing agreements, specifically related to network coverage and service quality. This action underscores the TRB’s commitment to enforcing service standards and safeguarding the rights of consumers within Cameroon’s burgeoning digital landscape.

Cracking Down on Service Quality

The TRB has been increasingly vigilant in monitoring the performance of major telecom operators, including MTN, Orange, and the state-owned Camtel. Issues such as insufficient network coverage and improper SIM card registration practices have drawn the regulator’s attention. TRB Director General Philémon Zoo Zame confirmed that the fines resulted from inspections conducted between April and May 2024, revealing failures to meet the required service standards.
