Renewable Energy in Algeria: Boukhalfa Yaïci Urges Increased Visibility and Support

Boukhalfa Yaïci, Director General of Green Energy Algeria, recently highlighted the progress and challenges surrounding Algeria’s ambitious renewable energy program, particularly solar power. Speaking on Radio Chaîne 3, Yaïci emphasized the need for greater visibility and continued support to ensure the successful deployment of clean energy technologies across the nation.

Accelerating Algeria’s Solar Energy Transition

Algeria’s national renewable energy program aims to generate 15,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2035, with solar power taking center stage. The initial tender, launched in February 2023, resulted in contracts signed in March 2024 for the construction of 3,200 megawatts, divided into three phases. These projects are currently underway, with awarded companies actively working on the sites. Yaïci noted the significant progress made in preparatory studies. While progress is evident, challenges remain, particularly related to the preparedness of all stakeholders involved in this transition. Addressing these challenges requires stronger coordination, streamlined processes, and increased awareness to support the rapid growth of Algeria’s renewable energy sector. This push for solar energy aligns with a broader trend across the African continent, where nations are increasingly leveraging renewable resources to power their economies and enhance energy security.

The successful realization of Algeria’s renewable energy goals hinges on continued collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and sustained government and private sector commitment. Increased visibility, advocacy, and capacity building within the sector will be crucial in attracting investment, fostering innovation, and ensuring that Algeria’s ambitious clean energy targets become a reality, contributing to a more sustainable future for the nation and the wider African region.
