SIM Activation and Replacements Halted as Nigerian Telcos Transition to New Identity Verification System

The rollout of a new identity verification portal by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is causing significant disruptions in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. Mobile network operators (MNOs) are currently migrating to the new system, leading to a temporary suspension of crucial SIM-related services, including SIM swaps, replacements, and new activations, impacting millions of subscribers. This development adds another layer to the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage exercise.

Impact on Telecom Subscribers and Services

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) confirmed the disruption, stating that all operators are affected. NIMC’s rationale for the migration is to enhance the security and efficiency of the national identity verification process. However, the abrupt nature of the technical transition has resulted in the suspension of real-time verification processes required for SIM registration, number porting, and other essential services. This interruption is particularly impactful in a country like Nigeria, where mobile connectivity is paramount for both personal and business activities, and these services are critical for everyday transactions and communications.

While the long-term goal of improved security and efficiency is laudable, the immediate disruption is causing inconvenience for Nigerian telecom subscribers. The hope is that the transition to the new NIMC platform will be swift and seamless, minimizing the downtime and allowing MNOs to resume full service delivery as soon as possible. Subscribers are advised to remain patient and await further updates from their respective mobile network operators regarding the restoration of SIM-related services.
