Fouka 2 Desalination Plant Hits Full Capacity: A Boost for Algeria’s Water Security

Algeria’s national oil company, Sonatrach, announced on July 1st that the Fouka 2 seawater desalination plant in Tipasa province has reached its full operational capacity, producing a staggering 300,000 cubic meters of water per day. This milestone represents a significant step forward in securing vital water resources for the region and underscores Algeria’s commitment to addressing water scarcity challenges. The plant’s full operational capacity follows an initial phased launch, inaugurated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in February 2025.

Boosting Water Supply for Key Algerian Regions

The Fouka 2 plant’s successful transition to full production capacity follows rigorous technical and experimental phases. This included comprehensive mechanical testing, quality control assessments, and thorough safety compliance verification, ensuring the plant meets the highest operational standards. The plant’s daily output of 300,000 cubic meters translates to 300 million liters of desalinated water daily, providing a crucial supply for the provinces of Tipasa, Algiers, and Blida. This increased water availability is particularly important considering Algeria’s reliance on groundwater and the increasing challenges posed by climate change and population growth, making it a vital infrastructure investment for the country.

The completion of the Fouka 2 plant at full capacity is a positive development for Algeria. It represents a key element in Sonatrach’s strategy to diversify its operations and contribute to the sustainable development of Algeria, providing water security that is crucial for the socio-economic well-being of its population. The investment highlights the country’s dedication to long-term water management and securing critical resources within an increasingly arid climate, setting a positive example for water management in other African nations facing similar water scarcity challenges.
