MTN Nigeria Unveils West Africa’s Largest Tier III Data Center, Stepping Up Cloud Competition

MTN Nigeria has officially launched the Sifiso Dabengwa Data Centre, a state-of-the-art Tier III facility poised to become the largest of its kind in West Africa and a significant player across the continent. This ambitious project marks a major step forward for digital infrastructure in the region, bringing cutting-edge cloud services closer to businesses and consumers. With a focus on reliability and scalability, the data center is strategically positioned to address the growing demand for data storage and processing capabilities, fueling innovation and economic growth across various sectors.

A New Era for Cloud Services in Africa

The data center, named in honor of a former MTN Group CEO, boasts an impressive nine-megawatt capacity, designed to provide robust and secure cloud infrastructure. The initial phase delivers 4.5 megawatts, with plans for expansion based on market demand. According to MTN Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, Yahaya Ibrahim, the total investment for both phases is valued at $235 million, with $20 million dedicated specifically to the advanced cloud infrastructure. Roger Shutte, General Manager for Infrastructure at MTN Nigeria, anticipates potential scaling up to 14 or even 20 megawatts to meet future needs, highlighting the facility’s adaptability. This substantial investment underscores MTN’s commitment to providing world-class technology solutions within the African context. The company aims to offer cloud services that can effectively compete with global giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, potentially reducing reliance on foreign providers and fostering local data sovereignty.
