Ethiopia Lights Up Tanzania: Historic Power Export Via Kenyan Grid

Ethiopia has officially commenced electricity exports to Tanzania, marking a significant leap forward in East African energy cooperation. This landmark achievement, facilitated through Kenya’s robust high-voltage transmission infrastructure, positions Ethiopia as a rising force in regional power generation and distribution. The initial power transfer represents not just a technical success, but also a powerful symbol of intra-African collaboration, leveraging existing infrastructure to address energy needs across borders.

Powering Progress: The Kenya-Ethiopia-Tanzania Connection

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) played a pivotal role in enabling this historic exchange. Utilizing the 400kV Suswa–Isinya transmission line, KETRACO successfully conveyed power from Ethiopia to the Kenya–Tanzania interconnector. This test run saw the line load increase from 225 MW to 262 MW, a clear demonstration of the system’s capacity and reliability for handling cross-border energy flows. This success underscores the importance of investing in modern grid infrastructure as a key enabler of regional integration and economic development. Beyond the immediate impact on energy supply, this initiative paves the way for increased adoption of renewable energy sources within the region, as Ethiopia is already generating power from hydro-electrical power.

The successful pilot program underscores the potential of the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) to transform the region’s energy landscape. As a 13-member initiative, the EAPP aims to foster a more interconnected and resilient power grid, allowing member states to share resources, reduce energy costs, and improve overall reliability. Ethiopia’s emergence as a power exporter, supported by Kenya’s transit infrastructure, sets a positive precedent for future collaborations within the EAPP framework.

This groundbreaking energy export signifies a new era of energy security and regional integration in East Africa. By leveraging its abundant energy resources and collaborating with neighboring countries, Ethiopia is not only bolstering its own economy but also contributing to the sustainable development of the entire region.
