NCC Boosts Broadband Access with New Infraco Licenses
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is doubling down on its commitment to expanding broadband access across Nigeria by granting two new Infrastructure Company (Infraco) licenses. This strategic move aims to bolster the nation’s digital infrastructure and propel wider internet adoption, particularly in underserved regions. These licenses represent a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and unlocking the socio-economic benefits of increased connectivity.
Expanding Infrastructure Across Nigeria
The latest recipients of the Infraco licenses are Zinox Technology Limited, a prominent player in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem known for its acquisition of Konga, and Brinks Integrated Solutions Limited. Zinox will focus on developing and deploying broadband infrastructure in the Southeast region, while Brinks Integrated Solutions will undertake the same task in the Northeast. These additions bring the total number of licensed Infracos to four. Previously, MainOne Cable Company Limited secured a license for Lagos, and IHS was granted a license to cover the North Central region, including Abuja. The Infraco licensing model is rooted in the NCC’s Open Access Model (OAM) and aligns with the goals of the National Broadband Plan (NBP). The NBP envisions achieving 30% broadband penetration across Nigeria, which these Infraco licenses are intended to support.
By strategically awarding these licenses, the NCC is fostering competition and innovation in the broadband sector. This expansion of infrastructure will pave the way for faster, more reliable internet services, enabling businesses to thrive, empowering individuals with access to online education and opportunities, and driving economic growth across the country.
