Local Gov Launches 24-Hour Market: Boost Economy!

Ghana’s Local Government Pioneers 24-Hour Economy Markets to Boost Local Economies

Ghana’s Ministry for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is spearheading a bold initiative to invigorate local economies: the pilot program for 24-hour economy market centers. This forward-thinking strategy aims to capitalize on round-the-clock economic activity within various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), fostering entrepreneurship and boosting local revenue. The initiative signifies a significant step towards creating a vibrant and resilient economic landscape across the nation, and could serve as a model for other African countries looking to spur local economic growth.

The project underscores a collaborative approach, uniting the Ministry with Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and the MMDAs. The aim is to create supportive environments that promote investment and entrepreneurship, particularly for women and youth. Key components include the development of robust security infrastructure and the incorporation of financial support through the Women Development Bank. This holistic approach aims to eliminate obstacles and foster a thriving environment for businesses to flourish.

Building a Foundation for 24/7 Commerce

The Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, highlighted the commitment to providing a robust policy environment, alongside comprehensive security infrastructure, as crucial for the success of these 24-hour market centers. These efforts are geared toward establishing safe and conducive environments where businesses can operate seamlessly around the clock. Security will be paramount. The success of this initiative is intertwined with the ability of the government to build the necessary infrastructure to support late-night operations.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance social cohesion and empower women and youth entrepreneurs, exemplified by the recent private sector forum held in Bolgatanga. This forum, centered on investment opportunities and access to finance for women and youth, provided a platform for entrepreneurs to connect with potential investors and gain insights into available resources. The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), organized the event.

Empowering Local Communities & Driving Investment

The NDPC has developed investment strategy toolkits to assist eight districts across the Upper East, North East, and Upper West Regions. The focus is on leveraging their comparative advantages and developing targeted strategies to attract investment and boost domestic revenue. The pilot project directly supports this initiative, and aims to stimulate investment in those regions, specifically boosting markets in the Garu, Bawku West, and Bongo Districts of the Upper East Region.

These regional fora serve as crucial platforms for strengthening collaboration among various stakeholders, including private sector actors, philanthropic organizations, and local government authorities. Furthermore, it seeks to empower the local communities, and drive investment for women and youth. This holistic method will empower the local communities and entrepreneurs, and support job creation and financial empowerment.

A Promising Outlook for Ghana’s Economic Growth

The pilot program represents a pivotal moment for Ghana’s local economies. By fostering a supportive environment for 24-hour market centers, the Ministry is actively working to spur entrepreneurship, attract investment, and unlock new economic opportunities. It is a dynamic strategy and will drive economic activity, especially for women and youth, and potentially serve as a model for broader economic transformation across the African continent.

The focus on a 24-hour economy signals an evolving economic landscape. This forward-thinking approach has the potential to redefine the business environment and will contribute to a stronger, more resilient economy for Ghana’s citizens.
