“Please Call Me” Saga: Legal Battle Resurfaces Over Payout

The long-running legal battle surrounding the “Please Call Me” service is far from over. Despite a recent settlement agreement between Vodacom and Nkosana Kenneth Makate, a new legal challenge has emerged, threatening to delay the disbursement of funds. This time, the dispute centers on the allocation of Makate’s payout, with his former legal funder, Black Rock Mining, claiming a significant share.

High Court Fight Over Settlement Percentage

Black Rock Mining, which previously financed Makate’s legal proceedings, is seeking 40% of the settlement amount. According to reports in the Sunday Times, the company has filed urgent court papers in the Johannesburg High Court to prevent Vodacom from releasing the funds to Makate until its claim is resolved. The hearing is scheduled for November 18. This legal action follows a previous arbitration where Black Rock’s claim was rejected. However, the company is persisting in its efforts to secure its portion of the settlement, maintaining it represents investor interests. This latest development underscores the complex and protracted nature of the “Please Call Me” case, which has captivated South Africa and the wider African tech landscape for years.
