Why Ghana Prints its Cedi Notes Abroad: A Look at Currency Production
The production of a nation’s currency is a complex and highly specialized undertaking. Many people in Ghana might not realize the intricate processes involved in creating the cedi notes they use daily. Recent clarification from the Bank of Ghana sheds light on why the country currently relies on external partners for its cedi printing needs, outlining technological and infrastructural considerations.
The Technological Challenge of Currency Printing
According to Dominic Owusu, Head of Currency at the Bank of Ghana, Ghana outsources its cedi printing primarily due to a lack of the advanced technology and robust security infrastructure necessary for producing banknotes that meet international standards. He emphasized that this practice isn’t unique to Ghana; many African nations and countries worldwide also rely on a limited number of specialized companies for this service. These companies possess the advanced machinery, secure facilities, and expertise required to produce currency that is resistant to counterfeiting and compliant with global best practices. In an interview with GhanaWeb Business during the Cedi@60 celebration on October 28, 2025, Owusu highlighted the scarcity of institutions globally capable of handling such specialized work.
