West African Telecom Sector Sees Post-Pandemic Investment Surge
The telecommunications industry in West Africa is experiencing a significant resurgence, with investment levels reaching heights not seen since before the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This positive outlook was highlighted by Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), during his address at the 2025 West Africa Telecommunications Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition (WATISE) held in Lagos.

The WATISE summit, hosted at the Radisson Blu Hotel, convened key players including regulators, telecom operators, fintech innovators, and financial institutions to explore the theme of “Digitalising West African Economy: Navigating Challenges and Opportunities for Critical Stakeholders.” Adebayo emphasized that the renewed investment boom in the telecom sector is creating substantial opportunities for growth across various industries. He underscored the critical role of telecommunications as the foundational “backbone of the digital economy,” enabling vital services and advancements in sectors such as banking, fintech, telemedicine, education, e-commerce, and even emergency services.
This renewed investment and focus on digitalization promises to accelerate economic growth and improve access to essential services for communities throughout the region. The telecom sector is poised to be a major driver of progress across West Africa in the coming years.
