China’s “Dark Factories”: The Rise of Workerless Production

A report from Franceinfo, published on December 3, 2025, illuminates a revolutionary shift in China’s industrial landscape: the proliferation of “dark factories.” These cutting-edge facilities represent the pinnacle of industrial automation, where robots and advanced AI in manufacturing have largely supplanted human labor. The term “dark factory” aptly describes environments that operate without the need for light or heating, as activity is almost entirely machine-driven, signaling a profound evolution in China manufacturing and the future of manufacturing.

Zeeker’s Automated Vehicle Production: A Blueprint for Efficiency

An exemplary case of this trend is found at Zeeker, an automotive manufacturer. Inside their plant, the atmosphere is uniquely disorienting, with production lines running continuously in perpetual dimness, designed for machines rather than humans. This facility showcases extensive robotics in industry, deploying 885 robots that manage the core industrial operations. Automated trolleys navigate the factory floor, seamlessly transporting components for electric vehicle production. Despite the vast scale of operations, only about a hundred employees are present on-site, primarily for oversight rather than hands-on labor. Small lamps occasionally pierce the dark aisles, signaling active zones where machines perform their tasks, with the rhythmic whirring of robots filling the air. This highly automated, workerless factory model is fundamental to Zeeker’s ambitious production targets, enabling them to produce up to 1,200 vehicles daily with unmatched efficiency.

The widespread adoption of these dark factories in China marks a significant milestone in global smart manufacturing. This level of industrial automation offers compelling insights for industrial development worldwide. As Africa’s tech ecosystem continues its remarkable growth and the continent prioritizes industrialization, observing China’s advancements in robotics integration and AI-powered production could inspire strategies for enhancing local manufacturing efficiency, optimizing resource utilization, and fostering competitiveness within the global economy. This trend underscores a pivotal shift towards digitally managed, highly efficient production methods that have the potential to reshape diverse industrial sectors across continents.
