Nigeria’s Power Generation Sees Significant Jump in October 2025

The Nigerian electricity sector experienced a notable surge in power generation in October 2025, according to data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The report highlighted a substantial increase in generated power, reflecting potential improvements within the nation’s energy infrastructure and its ability to power its citizens and businesses. However, challenges in distribution and grid stability still remain.

Detailed Analysis of October 2025 Power Statistics

NERC’s Fact Sheet, detailing the operational performance of power plants, revealed that Nigeria generated 5,506 megawatts (MW) of electricity across its grid-connected plants throughout October 2025. This figure represents a significant 60% month-on-month increase from September 2025. The generated power constituted 40% of the total national grid’s capacity, which, according to the commission, stood at 13,625MW across 18 plants. Despite the positive trend in generation, the report indicated that only 4,290MW of the generated electricity was actually utilized, marking a 5% increase in distribution. This signifies that 78% of the available power was distributed during the month. However, the report also highlighted grid instability. The average lower grid voltage (294.55kV) and average upper grid voltage (346.90kV) exceeded the prescribed limits, pointing to potential issues with power transmission and stability, despite the generated power being up 12%. This indicates potential strain on the power grid, despite the rise in generated electricity.

The data presented by NERC offers valuable insight into the Nigerian power sector’s performance and challenges. It underscores the importance of continued investment in generation capacity while also addressing crucial issues related to grid stability and efficient distribution to ensure reliable power supply across the nation.
