Nigeria’s NIN Enrollment Surges, Reaching 124 Million in 2025
Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has recorded significant progress in its national identity program. From January to October 2025, the commission issued an impressive 10 million new National Identification Numbers (NINs). This rapid expansion has propelled Nigeria’s total NIN enrollment to a substantial 124 million, marking one of the most substantial yearly increases in the last decade. This growth underscores the increasing importance of digital identity within the African tech landscape and its impact on various sectors.
Driving Digital Identity: Enrollment Details
Alvan Ikoku, NIMC’s Deputy Director and Head of Strategy, shared these positive developments during a session with the 2025 DPI/DPG Journalism Fellowship fellows in Abuja. He highlighted the “steady, aggressive growth” the commission has experienced, emphasizing the significant jump from 114 million enrollments in 2024 to the current 124 million. The gender distribution of NINs reveals a slight majority for men, with 69.7 million NINs issued to them, while women account for 54.2 million. Ikoku also mentioned that enrollment momentum continues strongly across the country, encompassing Nigerians both at home and within the diaspora. Lagos State is leading the chart with the highest registration, totaling 13.1 million.
