Ghana to Usher in Digital Era with “Dig Once” Policy

Ghana is poised to significantly upgrade its digital infrastructure with the government’s recent approval of a “Dig Once” policy. This initiative mandates the inclusion of fibre-optic ducts and access chambers in all new road construction projects, marking a pivotal step towards a more connected and efficient digital landscape. The move is expected to have a profound impact on the country’s digital development, setting a precedent for other nations in Africa.

Streamlining Digital Infrastructure Development

The core benefit of the “Dig Once” policy lies in its ability to eliminate the costly and disruptive practice of telecom operators having to repeatedly excavate roads to lay fibre-optic cables. This approach will translate into considerable cost savings for these operators and a reduction in network disruptions. By embedding the necessary infrastructure during road construction, Ghana aims to accelerate the deployment of broadband services throughout the nation. The policy was announced by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations at the Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town, emphasizing the transformative nature of this decision. The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications played a vital role in advocating for the policy over several years. According to the Minister, “Every new road is also going to be a digital road.”

This policy places Ghana at the forefront of infrastructure-led digitalization on the African continent, leading the way for smarter and more efficient broadband expansion. The “Dig Once” approach underscores Ghana’s commitment to creating a digitally inclusive society.
