Sonelgaz Records New Peak in Electricity Consumption Amidst Heatwave
Algeria’s state-owned energy company, Sonelgaz, through its subsidiary Sonelgaz – Transport et Opérateur Système, reported a record-breaking peak in national electricity consumption on Tuesday, reaching 19,994 megawatts at 13:56. This surge in demand underscores the growing pressure on Algeria’s power grid, particularly during periods of extreme weather.
Heatwave Drives Record Demand
The record peak is attributed to the intense heatwave currently affecting several regions of Algeria, coupled with high levels of humidity, particularly along the coast and in inland areas. This marks the second peak in electricity consumption recorded this week, highlighting the significant strain that these exceptional weather conditions are placing on the national electricity grid. Despite this increased demand, Sonelgaz assures the public that it is effectively meeting national needs. Furthermore, the company continues to export electricity to Tunisia without interruption, demonstrating the robustness and stability of Algeria’s national electricity system.
Despite the challenges posed by the heatwave and increased demand, Sonelgaz’s ability to maintain both domestic supply and export commitments reinforces its crucial role in the region’s energy landscape and showcases the resilience of Algeria’s energy infrastructure.
