Ghana Now Exporting Power After Achieving Energy Stability, Says Minister
Ghana’s energy sector has reached a significant milestone, transitioning from struggling with power supply to exporting surplus electricity to neighboring countries. This announcement was made by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during a press briefing held at the 7th Meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Regional Committee for the Africa Region in Accra on September 4, 2025. The achievement highlights the government’s dedication to improving energy access and integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid.
Focus on Renewables and Solar Irrigation
Minister Jinapor emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in Ghana’s energy mix. He stated, “Our power supply is fairly stable. We have enough, and we are even exporting. Our vision is to have a minimum of 10 percent of our energy mix from renewables, excluding our high-flow potential. Immediately, we want to work to deploy solar irrigation pumps across the country.” This initiative signals a strong push towards sustainable agriculture and utilizing solar power to boost farming productivity. The ISA Regional Committee meeting, which took place from September 2 to 4, saw the participation of 19 African Energy and Power Ministers, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing in the renewable energy sector.
Ghana’s newfound energy stability and export capacity demonstrate the country’s progress in strengthening its power infrastructure and embracing renewable energy solutions. The focus on solar irrigation further underscores the government’s commitment to utilizing green technologies for agricultural development and economic growth. This achievement positions Ghana as a leader in the African energy sector and a potential model for other nations striving for energy independence and sustainability.
