Ogun State Aims to Spearhead Nigeria’s Electric Vehicle Revolution
Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in the country’s emerging electric vehicle (EV) market. The elimination of fuel subsidies by Nigeria’s new president, Bola Tinubu, in May 2023, which led to a dramatic 450% increase in gas prices and persistent fuel shortages, has created a pressing need for alternative transportation solutions. This situation is driving the adoption of EVs, particularly electric motorcycles, as a more affordable and reliable option.
Electric Motorcycles Gain Traction
For residents like Bisi Alade, a ride-hailing driver in Abeokuta, the shift to electric motorcycles has been transformative. Alade, who now uses a Spiro Commando electric motorcycle, highlights the significant cost savings. A full charge costs him just 2,500 naira ($1.53) – half the price of fuel – and lasts an entire day. Spiro, an electric two-wheeler company founded in 2019 with operations in several African countries, is playing a key role in this transition. Alade notes, “Life is easier now since I started riding an electric motorcycle.”
Ogun State’s embrace of electric vehicles reflects a broader trend in Nigeria, as individuals and businesses seek ways to mitigate the economic impact of rising fuel costs and unreliable supply. The adoption of EVs offers a pathway towards more sustainable and affordable transportation, potentially revolutionizing the country’s mobility landscape.
