Tighremt Desalination Plant Reaches Final Commissioning Stage, Boosting Water Supply in Algeria
Algeria’s Sonatrach Group recently announced that the Tighremt seawater desalination plant, located in Toudja within the Béjaïa province, has entered the final phase of its progressive commissioning. This marks a significant step in addressing water scarcity challenges in the region and enhancing water security for Algerian citizens.
Gradual Ramp-Up and Increased Capacity
The desalination plant began operations on June 18, 2025, with the activation of its initial production unit, boasting a capacity of 30,000 cubic meters per day. Since then, production has steadily increased in accordance with a pre-defined schedule and a protocol agreed upon by the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), a subsidiary of Sonatrach, and Algérienne des Eaux (ADE), the national water company. The plant’s current capacity stands at 90,000 cubic meters per day, with expectations to reach 120,000 cubic meters per day in the coming days. As of July 5, 2025, over 215,730 cubic meters of desalinated water, meeting all applicable standards, have already been injected into the Algérienne des Eaux distribution network, demonstrating the plant’s growing contribution to the water supply.
The successful commissioning of the Tighremt desalination plant represents a crucial advancement in Algeria’s efforts to diversify its water resources and mitigate the impact of water stress. This project underscores the nation’s commitment to leveraging technological solutions to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for its population.
