Why Western Medias always add "former colony" to African countries name?

There is something strange in the habits of Western journalists covering African news. They keep adding “former colony of…” to the names of African countries in their content.

For example, every time Nigeria’s name pops up in an article, reportage or documentary, it is accompanied by a journalist’s remark “a former British colony”. read more
