How did we Succeed to Make our Son like Mathematics

It’s started with our intention to make him love mathematics. So, early on I printed the basic mathematics “alphabet” on A4 paper, and we would endless play with them.

Contrary to the usual approach of memorizing numbers, we focused instead on the basic mathematical symbols like what is +, -, ÷,×, √, π , =, {}, [ ], %, ^, (), < >,∑,∏,∩,∪,⊂,∈, Ø, etc.

The intuition to focus on the mathematical symbols instead of numbers came from a previous successful intuition about how to get kids to learn words quickly.

I’ve noticed while playing with him that he has a much strong somatic reaction to vowels than consonants. So, came the idea to start teaching the six vowels to him well in advance of the consonants. That effectively helped my son master vocabulary faster, with better pronunciation.

So, when it came to mathematics, I focused on making him familiar with math symbols first, then the numbers from 0 to 11.

A bit of memorization helped on the way, but also a bit of father propaganda for math.

When we’d buy a new toy, I’d ask my son if he knows how it has been made. He’d say no. Then I would say: “they do that with mathematics”. Then he’d say “really… I want to know mathematics to make toys”.

When we’d cross a bridge, I’d take him down to show him the structure and materials, and then ask him if he knows how they have built the bridge. He would respond no. Then, I’d say they did it with mathematics.

I did the same with everything that fascinates him like planes, computers, animations, Lego, cranes, boats, robots, etc.

It came a time when he would ask me to teach him mathematics, because he wants to build his own computer or create animations.

I’d jump on the occasion to brink him to bookstores where together we explore maths books. We’d spend time to go trough the available books while asking advice to the sellers.

After some time we were known in all the bookstores in town. On weekends after our “legendary son and father cross hill ride”, we would spend time in bookstores and later enjoy a good pizza.

Khan Academy website helped a lot. They have free videos for kids to learn math. Another website called “Make me Genius” has free videos that are very entertaining for kids.

The time our son started school, he was quite familiar with maths, and basic calculations. He is currently in the top of the best students in math nationwide.

As a side note, I’m null myself in mathematics. At school, I struggled a lot with math, and ended up doing humanities for my graduation.

I did not want that to happen to my son. I believe everyone should know two languages: social language which is your mother language, and nature langue which is mathematics. We live in society and in nature, so being fluent in both languages is good.

In conclusion, I’d say being good at math for kids could just be a matter of parents intention, because kids are very open to learning even the most complex language like mathematics if given a chance, and encouragement.

(In my next post, I’ll share how I thought my son to build social skills. We’d go out with the goal to make new friends, and papa would strike conversation with strangers on the street. It became such a great experience that he’d ask me: “papa let’s go out to make new friends”).
